Typhoid: Causes, Symptoms and Prevention

 Typhoid is a type of human disease also known as typhoid fever or enteric fever. Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection caused by a bacteria called Salmonella. This fever occurs in the digestive system of our body i.e. intestine. There are two types of Salmonella bacteria- 

1. Salmonella typhi 

2. Salmonella paratyphi.

The infection caused by Salmonella typhi is called typhoid and the infection caused by Salmonella paratyphi is called paratyphoid. Typhoid fever caused by Salmonella typhi is found in most people.

Causes of Typhoid

Typhoid can occur due to the following reasons- 

1.It is caused by eating a dirty food or drinking dirty water. 

2.Due to not keeping cleanliness around us, typhoid bacteria enter our body. 

3.Typhoid can be transmitted from person to person directly or indirectly. Typhoid bacteria are in the stool and urine of an infected person. When a person who has typhoid infection does not wash his hands properly after defecation or urine, then the food and drink that he touches, his infection goes into that food and drink and other person consumes it. If so, that person also becomes infected with typhoid.

Symptoms of Typhoid.

Typhoid in a person may have the following symptoms- 

High fever, abdominal pain, headache or body pain, constipation, races, loss of appetite, etc. 

Typhoid can remain in our body for 7 to 14 days and sometimes it remains in our body for 3 days to 30 days, its symptoms appear after 5 to 7 days of typhoid infection.

Typhoid test

The following types of tests are done to detect typhoid infection 

1.Widal test 

2.Typhidot 

3.Blood culture 

4.Stool culture/Urine culture 

5.Bone marrow


Prevention of typhoid. 

1.You should wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before eating food. 

2.If you can drink clean water, then boil the water and drink it. 

3.Do not eat outside food. 

4.Avoid eating raw vegetables and raw fruits. 

5.Eating stale food should be avoided.


What to eat in Typhoid? 

Fruits- Banana, Chikoo, Papaya, Apple, Seasonal Orange. 

Green vegetables- Spinach, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Carrot etc. 

Lentils, khichdi, curd, fresh juice, plenty of water.


What should not be eaten in typhoid. 

Caffeinated things like tea, coffee. 

Refined, Ghee, Oil 

Process Food – Samosa, Chowmein, Burger. Gram flour, corn, sweet potato, jackfruit, red chili, chili vinegar, garam masala, sour etc.
